2018-19 to 2019-20: Pound for Pound

I did a fun little exercise with the Montreal Canadiens’ players data. Back on September 8th, the day before the team’s medicals to open training camp, I took a snapshot of the players’ weight. This information has now been updated and I’ve compiled for you, faithful readers, the differences for each player. Some have stayed approximately the same weight but others have gained or lost several pounds. For example, we knew that Jesperi Kotkaniemi had put on 14 lbs in the off season and so far, it seems to have slowed him down a bit, although we’re only in pre-season and it’s way too early to sound the alarm in his case… or anyone’s for that matter.

Here are the results for each player, individually, for your enjoyment. On the left side of the red line were the listed weights from last season. To the right, the new information updated on the Canadiens’ official website.

Riley Barber had put on 13 lbs from the same time last year and he now finds himself on waivers (as of September 24th). Surprisingly, Paul Byron has lost 5 lbs, which few of us thought he needed to lose. Dale Weise has shedded 10 lbs and Keith Kinkaid is 9 lbs lighter.

Please note that since I only want to go with the official team’s (NHL) numbers, I do not have the information about players like Nick Suzuki and Ryan Poehling, although those are likely available from other sources.

It will be interesting to see how this fluctuation affects, if any, some of the Habs’ players, at least for those who stick around. But before we judge, let’s wait for the season to be under way, shall we? Go Habs Go!
